This Victorian Paste Moon & Stars brooch is a bit out of the ordinary! Many Victorian paste brooches of the time featured circular crescent moons with a single large star in the middle, but to find one like this with a wide crescent shape with three stars inside is quite unusual! Suffice to say, we felt compelled to add it to our collection.
The body of the brooch is made from 900 Silver, which was a purity seen in antique jewellery before 925 became the standard and it is set with a beautiful array of graduated paste stones that glitter and twinkle like the night sky!
This brooch has a nice sturdy pin and we think it would look great on a scarf or on a piece of velvet around the neck. It would certainly add a generous dash of sparkle to any outfit!
ERA: Victorian (1837-1901)
MEASUREMENTS: The entire length of the brooch measure 62mm from tip to tip.
It is 9mm at it's widest point.
The large star measures approx. 7mm across at widest point.
The smaller stars measure approx. 5mm across at widest point.
The Pastes graduate from 1.5mm to 4mm in diamet
MATERIALS: 900 Silver, Paste
HALLMARKS: Stamped "900" for Silver purity
CONDITION: Very Good
This brooch is in very good condition for its age! The Silver to the back of the brooch has tarnished over the years giving it a dark patina, which in our eyes only makes the Paste shine brighter! It's one of the wonderful things about antique Silver that makes it so desirable. The Paste stones are bright and well matched with no chips or nibbles, with just one or two of the smaller stones at the sides showing an ever so slightly darker colour that the rest. Overall, a wonderful and charming piece with tonnes of character and style!
