This beautiful antique Silver repousse heart pendant would have originally been used as a vessel for carrying snuff or tobacco and makes a striking and unusual locket. We love the decorative effect of the ornate textured patterns.
Repousse is term given to fine metalwork, where the Silver or Gold has been worked into an intricate raised design. It's been used as far back as ancient Egypt to decorate precious items but was especially popular during the 1800 and 1900's - especially on the continent.
This pendant / locket is in extremely fine condition for its age and looks fantastic worn on a thick Silver belcher chain.
Not to be confused with modern replicas or copies, this item is authentic antique! It has a lovely dark patina and quite a flat profile, so it's easy to wear despite its impressive size.
The chain pictured is not included but one can be added at the checkout.
ERA: Victorian (1837-1901)
MEASUREMENTS: The heart measures 47mm by 43mm at its widest, and 10mm deep.
MATERIALS: Sterling Silver
HALLMARKS: None present, tested as Sterling Silver
As with most vintage and antique items, this antique Silver repousse heart pendant does show some signs of use commensurate with age. Historically it would have been used as a snuff-box, and there are faint remnants of some of the old contents inside. We have left the item as found but it could easily be cleaned and brought up to a more polished look if you prefer!
The repousse finish is very fine with no damage or dings. The box or locket opens and closes shut tight properly without issue and is perfectly suitable for daily wear. Ready to enjoy!
