This fine antique Paste brooch is a lovely example of Paste jewellery from the turn of the twentieth century. Crafted circa 1900, this brooch was skillfully created, with each sparkling Paste gemstone expertly set by hand!
In 1724, French jeweller Georges Frédéric Strass invented “Paste,” a leaded glass that was the painstakingly cut & polished with metal powder until it appeared to shimmer like a diamond in the light. It was an instant hit with the trés chic Parisian high society.
This beautiful brooch is set with countless Paste gems in a large floral design, and has the prettiest mille-graine details in the settings throughout. Although it is Silver plated rather than solid Silver it still an exceptional piece, full of beauty and impact.
Despsite being quite large, (nearly 6 centimeters!) it's not too heavy or cumbersome, and is a surprisingly versatile piece of antique jewellery.
It looks fabulous threaded with some wide velvet ribbon and worn as a choker or bracelet, on a simple Silver chain as a pendant, or pinned as a glamorous focal point just between the bust.
A fine and unusual specimen for any collector.
