A splendid Victorian locket crafted from Sterling Silver, with an ornate embossed border.
Circa 1880, this locket would have been made under the rule of Queen Victoria. Although it lacks hallmarks we can see from the style it was most likely of English or Continental origin.
It's a medium to large sized locket, measuring 40mm long excluding the typically Victorian over-sized bale.
To the reverse the design is much simpler, replacing the decorative border with a ring of polished Silver.
The two-sided nature of the design brings much versatility to the piece, and it looks just as good dressed up as down. Great on a long Silver chain, on a Victorian book-chain collar, or on a simple velvet ribbon.
ERA: Victorian (1837-1901)
MEASUREMENTS: The locket measures 33mm wide x 40mm long
MATERIALS: Sterling Silver
HALLMARKS: None present. Tests as Sterling Silver
CONDITION: Very Good
This locket has stood the test of time, and has survived exceedingly well considering it's age. Circa 1870, the locket opens and closes shut tight and the hinge and bale is strong enough for daily wear even now. The decorative embossed border is still crisp so you can see the beautiful design in all its glory. Inside there is one original Sterling Silver frame but no glass.
As with most antiques it does show some signs of wear commensurate with age. There are some light brush-marks along the plain oval panels and some small shallow dings on each side. These are not very noticeable at all when worn and only seem to appear in certain lights. All in all a gorgeous piece that is steeped in history.
