This beautiful antique paste cross is an exceptional example of paste or "Strass" jewellery from the late Georgian period.

It was hand crafted during the early 19th Century from the finest materials available at the time, and is just as beautiful today as it was two centuries ago!

It's a large pendant, measuring just over 7 centimeters including the hoop, and made from Sterling Silver. The years have given it an attractive patina in the processes of the settings and the paste gemstones are stunning and all in excellent condition.

The paste was cut and polished by hand, and you can see this clearly on close inspection as each one is slightly different, each with their own distinct shape and character. They sparkle with a dazzling fire in daylight, but they're also quite be-witching in low level lighting too...It was designed to be seen mainly by candle-light, and so it twinkles beautifully after dark.

Georgian crosses are very rare but this one has a couple of unusual things about it. Most Georgian jewellery comes with closed back settings, but as you can see here as we move closer to the Victorian era some open back settings start to be seen. This is great is it allows lots of light to reach the gems and shows them off to their best advantage.

As we know paste was often used in conjunction with or instead natural precious gems such as Diamonds and clear paste was often hand painted with a little dot right on the bottom to simulate the appearance of a Diamond's inclusions. This is often referred to as "black dot paste". This is unusual in that is has no black dots, giving the appearance of large, beautifully faceted bright and clear Diamonds!

This could be a once in a lifetime find, with great history and quality.

The chain here is not included but one can be added at the checkout if required. We recommend a fairly heavyweight or robust chain to support the weight of the cross.
