This impressive locket would have been crafted during the Victorian Era and is hallmarked for the year 1880. It's made from solid Sterling Silver and has been gilded with 9ct Gold both inside & out.
Over the years and decades this luxurious Gold layer has faded and taken on an attractive Rose Gold hue on the outside, whilst the inside remains the brighter, gloriously rich Yellow Gold colour.
This locket is certainly not for shrinking violets; it's rather large measuring 6cm long if you include the over-sized Victorian bale, and is a weighty, robust piece. It has an elegantly domed profile which feels lovely to the touch, ad is engraved with ivy leaves on both sides.
The Locket is hallmarked inside on both sides, as well as the back of the bale, which is also beautifully engraved.
A fabulous piece of history that's just full of antique charm!
ERA: Victorian (1837-1901)
MEASUREMENTS: Locket measures 34mm wide x 43mm tall. Bale measures 15mm.
MATERIALS: Sterling Silver
HALLMARKS: Lion passant for Sterling Silver, "G&A" Makers mark, Birmingham anchor assay mark, Date letter "F" - 1880
CONDITION: Very Good
This large Victorian locket is in very good condition for it's age. It opens and closes shut tight and has two for two very large photographs. It's complete with 2 original frames, and one original glass inner. There are no dents, dings or damage whatsoever & structurally sound.
The gilding has begun to wear slightly and appears somewhat patchy on the back- revealing the Sterling Silver beneath. The front however has less wear and retains an even Rose Gold appearance. Overall a fantastic piece of history at a very competitive price!
