Mourning jewellery has been around since the 1600's, but it became extremely popular during the late 1800's.

Queen Victoria was utterly devoted to her husband of more than two decades, and went into a 40 year long period of mourning after his death in 1861. She wore a strict black dress code that we now know heavily influenced the fashions of the day, and ruled that only mourning jewelry could be worn in court until about 1880.

Mourning lockets became something that almost everyone would wear, from the common folks to high gentry, as a symbol of love and respect for their loved ones passed.

This locket was crafted from 9ct Yellow Gold back and front with "in Memory of" in fine black enamel on the front. It has a wonderful, slightly gothic style to it with the stylized lettering which is highly collected. And to the back there is a very detailed and beautiful floral engraving, with a blank cartouche that you could have engraved with an initial or two if you wish.

The enamel is in exceptional condition for it's age and the locket has room for two good-sized photographs inside.

The chain pictured is not included but a selection of solid 9ct Gold chains are available from £50. Please get in touch for more information or simply add one to your cart.
