Antique Heavy English Silver Albert Chain Necklace & Tbar- Circa 1911

Antique Heavy English Silver Albert Chain Necklace & Tbar- Circa 1911

"Albert chains" are named after a style of watch chain Prince Albert wore during the Victorian period. Traditionally an Albert chain has a "T-bar"on one end used to affix the chain to a vest button hole and the opposite end of the chain is fitted with a swivel hook to attach the watch. Today they are often converted into gorgeous bracelets and necklaces, as you see here.

This beautiful Albert chain is a genuine antique, circa 1911, and was crafted in the English town of Birmingham. It features a beautiful graduated chunky curb chain that's 9mm at it's widest and tapers down to 7mm. It has lovely rounded links, a swiveling clasp (or "dog clip" as they are sometimes called) and a heavy T-bar.

It measures approximately 16" or 40cm, so would best suit a small neck as it is, but for collectors the beauty of this item is the hooks can be used to join 2 or even 3 similar necklaces together to create a much longer chain!

Another lovely feature is that almost every single link has been individually hallmarked for Silver- which is just testament to the care and craftsmanship that went into the item. The T-bar and clasp is also individually marked.

It's worth noting the T-bar on this necklace is static rather than mobile so you can't move it around. The clasp does up at the front of the neck for an interesting, and dare I say it quite a modern look!

A great piece of history with a robust, quality feel to it that you can wear & enjoy today. Wear it as is or personalize by attaching charms and pendants.

  Edwardian (1901-1909)

MEASUREMENTS:  Weight: 58.4g

MATERIALS:  Sterling Silver

HALLMARKS:  Birmingham assay, Maker's Mark "JM", Date Letter "M" for 1911

As with most antiques this necklace does show some signs of wear commensurate with age. It's clear the necklace has been worn and enjoyed for many years from the look of the silver. It's taken on a pretty softer Silver look rather than the high polish you see in newer items.

The chain is in excellent, robust condition throughout and will last another 100 years easily. There is some significant wear to the bottom of the dog clip but it's in good wearable condition. You may wish to replace it with another dog clip or have a jeweller build it up if you plan to wear it daily.
